]]> http://www.robinsonmg.com/2011/03/banff-world-media-festival/feed/ 0 History Makers Awards 2011 http://www.robinsonmg.com/2011/01/history-makers-awards-2011/ http://www.robinsonmg.com/2011/01/history-makers-awards-2011/#comments Sat, 29 Jan 2011 13:24:48 +0000 Robinson Media http://www.robinsonmg.com/?p=198 Well, chalk up another successful History Makers Awards at the Marriott Marquis in Times Square, with Robinson Media Group providing video and graphics production for the show.  Last year’s event was our first with History Makers, and we learned a lot.  For example, last year we did all of the production in the 3 days prior to the event, which meant long days and multiple trips back and forth from Edge Studios in Manhattan to Connecticut.  This year, however, we were able to get about a month’s head start, which allowed us to use our full creative resources, and while we still had plenty of work to do once we arrived in New York, we felt much more comfortable having accomplished the more time consuming pieces in advance.  We were also fortunate to have had our own production room to work out of on site at the Marriott, and a 2 night stay at the hotel.

This year, we provided the following production elements:

• Session Opener — A short video open for the breakout sessions that occur before the show

• Award Show Opener — A 45 second video piece that highlights the nominees for each category

• Category Openers — An intro video for each of the 6 categories

• Nominee Clips — A montage of nominee videos for each of the categories

• Winner Clips — A 1 minute video piece that plays while the winner makes their way to the stage

• Show Close — Credits and outro video

This year’s theme, which was provided to us by History Makers based on the graphic elements used in creating their website, was “taxis”.  With this theme in mind, we came up with the idea of “sticking” the category names onto various NYC taxis and other elements in Times Square.  So, we headed down to New York on a frigid December morning to get the footage that we needed.  The next few days were spent motion tracking in After Effects and Mocha AE, sticking text and logos into place, magically erasing some unwanted elements that were on the taxis, and corner-pinning graphics onto the screens in Times Square.

The days prior to the event were spent editing and prepping the nominee and winner clips, producing the end credits and burning all of the needed clips to disk.

One really cool thing about this year’s awards show was that we were able to bring some of our students from Connecticut School of Broadcasting, our sister company, to help out at the event.  They did a fantastic job, and represented us well.
